According to the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) and the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), all physicians should demonstrate several key ‘leadership’ skills and qualities. However, many physicians take on key leadership roles in medical and healthcare administration without being provided with appropriate training and skill development.

In response, Memorial University of Newfoundland (Office of Professional and Educational Development, Faculty of Medicine and Gardiner Centre, Faculty of Business Administration), in collaboration with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the province’s four Regional Health Authorities (RHAs), developed the Physician Management & Leadership Program (PMLP) and the Advanced Physician Management & Leadership Program (APMLP) for those already in, or interested in taking on, one or both of these roles.

  • The Physician Management & Leadership Program (PMLP) and Advanced Physician Management & Leadership Program (APMLP) prepare physicians (and other healthcare professionals working in medical administration) to become effective leaders and managers.
  • The Faculty of Medicine (Office of Professional & Educational Development) and the Faculty of Business Administration (Gardiner Centre) of Memorial University, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, have developed these programs collaboratively.
  • Using a combination of online, onsite and blended approaches to learning, these programs have been designed so that participants can study around their busy schedules.

Memorial’s Advanced Physician Management & Leadership Program (APMLP) approved for 65 credits toward the Canadian Certified Physician Executive (CCPE) credential

The Canadian Society of Physician Leaders has approved Memorial’s APMLP program for inclusion on CSPL’s Canadian Certified Physician Executive credential’s list of eligible academic programs. The credential recognizes and advances physician leadership and excellence through a national, peer-generated, standards-based assessment process. It is based on the tenets of the LEADS in a Caring Environment Capabilities Framework.

Memorial’s PMLP program approved for 30 credits toward CCPE credential

The Canadian Society of Physician Leaders has confirmed approval of Memorial University’s Physician Management and Leadership Program for inclusion onto its list of CCPE-eligible programs for a total of 30 credits, with the potential in the future for the PMLP program to be combined with the upcoming Advanced Physician Leadership Program for a larger total once the APLP program has been assessed.

Currently, at 30 credits, the PMLP program would be included in the “20 further credits” asked of some of the shorter full programs.
